Cybersecurity Strengthening Tips That’ll Fend off Hackers

Hackers on the web are just as active as we are. No matter if we are an organization or an individual, we have a lot to protect – our identity, our financial details, sensitive data, and so much more. If hackers are able to succeed in forcing their way inside a system, or systems, that we use, all the data we have on that system is at the disposal of the hacker who will, most certainly, misuse it to blackmail us. Which is why cybersecurity experts suggest using certain techniques that can safeguard every device on the web – a phone, a tablet, an iPad, a smart TV, a computer, a laptop, and even surveillance cameras. What’s required of us is to apply those techniques to reduce hack vulnerability. The techniques in question are as follows.

  1. Adopting Better Password Practice

Everything about a password is important. Whenceforth, following the below mentioned tips is necessary.

  • Don’t make it Predictable – Don’t use the names of your parents or pets to make a password. Don’t use the name of your favorite place or your favorite book either. Another disaster that’s doing rounds in using ‘Forgot Password’ as the password. Just don’t do it. Don’t use anything that’s too simple and too predictable.
  • Choose Something Random – A good password is something very random, something that’s at least 8 characters long (longer than that is good, but don’t make it any shorter), and something that you aren’t using for any other account.
  • Try MFA as a Security Practice – MFA is multi-factor authentication. When you use MFA as a form of password, the system can be accessed only after all the layers of security are cleared. This is one practice that highly discourages hackers. So try to use it wherever you can.
  1. Installing Software Updates

If you have an obsolete version of a password and you haven’t yet installed the updates that the software developers have released for the public, then you’re inviting a lot of trouble. Updated software versions are released when bugs from the previous versions are patched. Not using the updated version means hackers will still be able to use those bugs to infiltrate your system.

  1. Using Password Management Tools

Here’s what you need to know and do when you have multiple passwords.

  • Do not note those passwords down in a file that’s not encrypted.
  • There are password management tools that are developed just for the purpose of saving passwords. In this way, you’ll have just one password to remember – the password of the management tool you’re using.

Last, but not the least, always remember to backup your data. Remember, no matter how many cybersecurity techniques and layers you use, nothing on the internet is 100% safe. Having the data backed up is thus one of the best practices to deal with the problem of ransomware – since you’ll already have the data that the hacker has hacked, you won’t have to pay them any ransom to recover the data.
